Privacy Policy.
In short
- Samklang has no account. We don't know who you are.
- Your music, your speakers, your groups and your settings stay on your own network, in Samklang Server on your computer. We never receive them.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics, and nothing sold.
- If Samklang or Samklang Server crashes, a crash report comes to us so we can fix it, with nothing that identifies you.
- Apple handles the subscription. We don't see your name or card.
- What else reaches us: Samklang Server asking our website once a day whether there is a new version, and messages you send us.
Who we are
Samklang is made by wieo AB (org. no. 559061-4508), Sturegatan 7b, Malmö, Sweden, which is responsible for the personal data described here. Privacy questions: privacy@wieoapps.com.
Samklang's parts
- Samklang, the app for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Samklang Server, free software that runs on your own Mac or Raspberry Pi.
- Satellites, Raspberry Pi Pico W boards running our free software next to your Bluetooth speakers.
- This website, samklang.wieoapps.com.
What stays in your home
These are kept on your own devices. They are never sent to us, and we can't see them.
| Where | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Samklang Server, on your computer | The speakers on your network, their names, your groups and timing settings, the satellites, which Samklang apps are paired, and a log of what it did (kept on that computer). | To play to your speakers and keep them in sync. |
| Samklang, on your iPhone, iPad or Mac | The key it pairs with your Samklang Server (in the Keychain), and its own settings. | To reach your server. |
| A satellite | Your Wi-Fi's name and password, and the Bluetooth speaker it pairs with. | To join your Wi-Fi and play on the speaker. Samklang sends the Wi-Fi details straight to the satellite, never to us. |
| What you play | The music, and its title, artist and cover. | It goes from the app you play from, through Samklang Server, to your speakers, all on your network. |
A Chromecast that Samklang plays to shows its waiting screen from this website (see below). The music itself never passes through us.
What reaches us
Checking for updates
Once a day, Samklang Server fetches a small file from samklang.wieoapps.com that lists the latest versions. Like any web request, it carries your network's IP address. Nothing else is sent: no ID, no settings, no list of speakers. Samklang uses the answer to tell you when something new is out, and nothing is installed until you approve. You can turn the check off in Samklang's Settings (Look for new versions); then nothing at all is fetched from us.
This website and the Chromecast screen
When you visit this website, download Samklang Server, or a Chromecast loads Samklang's waiting screen from here, our server receives the request with its IP address, like any website. We keep no logs of visits. The website uses no cookies, no analytics and nothing from other sites: no fonts, scripts or images loaded from anywhere else.
To protect the server, it counts requests per IP address in memory for a few minutes. Only if an address floods the server or probes for weaknesses is a report about it stored: the IP address, its country and network (looked up on our own server), the reason, the pages it asked for, and its browser's name. We keep these reports only as long as we need them to handle the attack.
Crash and performance reports
If Samklang or Samklang Server crashes or runs into an error, it sends a report to our own error tracker, so we can fix it. A report holds what went wrong and where in our code, the version, the kind of device and its operating system. Samklang and Samklang Server also send how long some of their own steps take (such as starting, or carrying out a command), for a fifth of them, chosen at random.
A report never holds your name, your IP address, your speakers' or groups' names, your Wi-Fi, or anything you play. There is no ID that ties reports to you. We keep reports for 90 days, then they are deleted.
Reports are part of how Samklang works, so they can't be turned off. They are sent only by the versions we release, not by test versions.
The subscription
You subscribe through Apple. Apple handles payment and gives us sales figures, but not your name, your Apple Account or your card. Samklang checks with Apple, on your device, whether your subscription is active. Apple's privacy policy covers what Apple keeps.
Messages to us
When you write to support@wieoapps.com or privacy@wieoapps.com, we receive your e-mail address and what you write, and use them to answer. We delete them when they're no longer needed.
Legal basis
- Legitimate interests (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): answering update checks, serving the website and the Chromecast screen, protecting the server from attacks, crash and performance reports, and answering your messages. You can turn the update check off at any time.
- Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)): the subscription, through Apple.
We don't use data for advertising or profiling, and make no automated decisions about you.
Who processes data for us
- Hosting: this website runs on servers we rent in the EU.
- Apple: the App Store, payments and the subscription, under Apple's privacy policy.
- Google: a Chromecast talks to Google's services as usual when Samklang plays to it, under Google's privacy policy. Samklang sends Google nothing about you.
- Let's Encrypt issues the website's security certificate. It sees only the website's name, never visitors.
Apple and Google may process data in the United States, under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, object to how we use it, or ask us to limit it. Since Samklang has no account, the only personal data we may hold is a message you sent us or an abuse report about your IP address. Write to privacy@wieoapps.com; we answer within a few days. You can also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY, imy.se) or the authority where you live.
To remove what is in your home, delete Samklang from your devices, remove Samklang Server from your computer, and put a satellite back to factory settings by flashing it again.
Children
Samklang collects no personal data from anyone using it, children included.
Security
Samklang and Samklang Server talk over an encrypted connection, and a Samklang app must be paired with a code before it can control your server. Updates for satellites are signed by us, and a satellite installs only software we signed. This website is served over HTTPS only.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes. Important changes are announced in Samklang before they take effect.
