Getting started

Where do I start?

Set up Samklang Server on a Mac or a Raspberry Pi Zero W, then open Samklang on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and pair with it. The setup guide shows each step.

Samklang doesn't find my server
  • Your phone and Samklang Server must be on the same network. A guest network often keeps devices apart.
  • On iPhone: Settings → Apps → Samklang → Local Network must be on.
  • On a Mac running Samklang Server: allow Samklang Server under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, and check that it is switched on in its window.
  • A Raspberry Pi takes about 5 minutes the first time it starts. After that, about a minute.
Where is the pairing code?

The first device that pairs with a new Samklang Server needs no code: it becomes the owner. For the next ones, open Samklang on a device that's already paired and go to Settings → Add a device. On a Mac running Samklang Server, the code is also in its window.

A new Raspberry Pi waits 30 minutes for its first device. If Samklang asks for a code before anyone has paired, unplug the Pi, plug it in again, and pair within half an hour.

Can guests play to my speakers?

Yes. Like any AirPlay speaker, Samklang's speakers take music from anyone on your Wi-Fi. Only paired devices can change Samklang's settings.

Speakers

A speaker doesn't show up
  • Check that it plays from its own app (Google Home, Sonos and so on) and is on the same network as Samklang Server.
  • Apple TV: under Settings → AirPlay and HomeKit → Allow Access, choose Anyone on the Same Network or Everyone.
  • Speakers that are switched off or asleep appear when they wake.
One speaker plays a little early or late

Samklang keeps speakers in sync while they play. If one still sounds off, open it in Samklang and move it a few milliseconds earlier or later.

Where is the Everywhere speaker?

In the AirPlay list of any app that plays music: Control Centre on an iPhone, the AirPlay button in Music or Spotify, or the Sound menu on a Mac. Your own groups show up there too, each with its own name.

Satellites

What the light on the satellite means

The small green light next to the Pico's USB socket shows what the satellite is doing.

  • On all the timeStarting, or joining your Wi-Fi.
  • Three blinks, a pauseReady to be set up: add it in Samklang under Settings → Satellites → Add a satellite.
  • Blinks fastOn your Wi-Fi, but not connected to its speaker. Is the speaker on and nearby?
  • A slow blinkConnected to its speaker and ready. The speaker plays a short chime.
  • HeartbeatPlaying music.
No RPI-RP2 drive appears when I plug in the Pico

Hold BOOTSEL down while you plug it in, and only let go afterwards. Still nothing? Many micro-USB cables only charge: try another one.

The satellite doesn't join my Wi-Fi

A Pico W only uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Most routers have it, sometimes under a separate name. If it can't join, the satellite opens its setup network again after a few minutes, and Samklang can send it the Wi-Fi details once more.

The satellite doesn't find my Bluetooth speaker

Put the speaker in pairing mode (usually by holding its Bluetooth button until it blinks), close to the satellite, and search again. A speaker paired to a phone nearby may connect to the phone instead: turn Bluetooth off on the phone while you pair.

Updating a satellite

When new satellite software is out, Samklang shows it and asks you. Nothing changes until you tap Update. The satellite restarts for about a minute; music playing on it stops. If an update fails, the satellite keeps its old software, and you can try again.

The subscription

How much does Samklang cost?

Samklang Server and the satellite software are free. The Samklang app is a monthly or yearly subscription. Each plan starts with a free week, and begins after it unless you cancel; the App Store shows the price in your currency. One subscription covers your iPhone, iPad and Mac with the same Apple Account.

How do I cancel?

On your iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Samklang → Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least a day before it renews. You keep Samklang until the end of the period you paid for.

A refund

Apple handles payments and refunds. Ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.

I bought it on another device

Open Samklang, go to Settings and tap Restore purchases. Use the same Apple Account as when you subscribed.
